Kenya and Africa in the Stanford HAI AI Index Report 2024

While heavily US leaning, here are some takeaways on Kenya (and Africa) from the AI Index Report 2024 released by Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI):

  1. 👩🏾‍🔬 Africa's Representation in NeurIPS Women in Machine Learning workshop is increasing: In 2023, 8.93% identified as coming from the continent compared to 3.40% in 2022. That's an almost 3x shift

  1. 🤓 Kenyans are leading in awareness of ChatGPT, only behind India by 1%: According to Global Public Opinion on Articial Intelligence (GPO-AI), 2024, 81% of Kenyans polled know what ChatGPT is. India is at 82%.

  1. 👨🏽‍💻 Kenyans use ChatGPT more often than most: 27% of Kenyans polled use the OpenAI platform daily, ranked 3rd after India, and Pakistan. And 42% use it weekly, only beaten by China.

  1. 🕵🏽 Kenyans don't trust the accuracy of AI results but don't expect misuse: 47% of Kenyans polled are concerned of AI's impact on education, 54% on its impact on jobs, and 43% on accuracy. Otherwise 34% are concerned about misuse which is the second lowest % after Pakistan of 31%.
